Earth Day with Your Friends at Norman Vethe School Forest & Prairie
April 23, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Celebrate Earth Day with the Friends of Cottage Grove Library at the Norman Vethe School Forest at Cottage Grove School. Gather a greater appreciation for our natural world while exploring the flora and fauna in your neighborhood, learning ways to live more sustainably, and using upcycled materials for STEAM-inspired play.
- Nature Walk – Lead by a Wisconsin Master Naturalist, wander the Norman Vethe School Forest and Prairie to learn about the native plants, animals, and insects that are supported by healthy green spaces in the community.
- Story Walk in the Forest – Follow a story as you wander down the trail with your family. Thank you to our friends at the Monona Public Library for lending us their materials for the event.
- Composting 101 & Sale – Learn composting basics from Master Composter Amy Free of Create Ecology. Compost bins and rain barrels will be available for purchase through the Village of Cottage Grove Sustainability Committee.
- Trash to Treasure Station – Tap into your creativity! Give used household items new life and create a new masterpiece.
- Dane County Trash Lab – Created by the Dane County Department of Waste & Renewables in collaboration with Madison Children’s Museum, the Trash Lab is a mobile exhibit designed to educate and motivate us to create less trash and rethink our relationship with waste. The Trash Lab will be located in the Cottage Grove School parking lot.
- Dane County Area Historical Society – The DCAHS will be at the event to share the history of the Norman Vethe School Forest and original plans from the 1961 planning committee.
The 68-acre gem can be entered from behind the Cottage Grove School Forest or off of Taylor Street. We will have volunteers at both entrances and maps to help guide your exploration.
This event is the second in our 2022 series designed to show the community of Cottage Grove how libraries add value beyond books. Thank you to our donors, volunteers and Steve Stricker Foundation for supporting our important work.
Please register in advance so we know how many people are attending, but walk up registration will be available. Keep checking back for more details.
