About the Friends of the Cottage Grove Library

The Friends of the Cottage Grove Community Library, Inc. began meeting in the summer of 1998. The group had over 75 members and held many activities including used book sales, garden tours, and quilt raffles. We participated in local events and donated to our school libraries. In 2004, the Friends received non-profit status and supported the Library Board for several years.

Currently, we provide the volunteers and resources to advocate for a permanent public library in Cottage Grove. The group organizes and supports programs to enhance literacy skills for all our residents.

Friends of the Cottage Grove Library History

Ruth Graves was a postmistress and the first librarian in Cottage Grove.

Mrs. Graves received books from the Traveling Library. The books were stored in wooden boxes and transported by train to the Cottage Grove post office. She shelved the books and provided free lending. This continued until the Bookmobile began weekly visits in the early 1960’s. Special thanks to the Cottage Grove Area Historical Society for the information and photo.
